Zuleyka. 2009

Ponta de Areia by Milton Nascimento

I own so many versions of this Brazilian classic sung by different artists.

But this is actually my favourite version, sung by Milton Nascimento, a prominent Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist.

The song is about an old train station “Ponta de Areia” that was given up by people.

English Translation (from http://www.maguinha.com/music-11.html)

Ponta de Areia, last stop of the Bahia-Minas.

Natural road that linked Minas to the harbor, to the sea.

An order was issued to pull out the railway tracks.

Old locomotive engineer with his cap remembers the cheerful people

with welcome greetings.

Smoky Mary? (the locomotive) no longer passes by girls,

flowers, windows and backyards.

In the empty square a cry, a moan…?Forgotten houses,

Widows at the front door.
