Guest Post: GW Thomas on Buck Rogers: The First Space Hero

I've never had a guest post before, but GW Thomas runs the very excellent Adventure! blog and not only are our blog's names similar, but our interests are so close that I was thrilled when he agreed to write a series of articles about classic Space Pulp heroes for me. And even more thrilled when he decided to cover them in chronological order, because my particular brand of OCD is all about chronological order. Thanks again, GW, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

People often forget where things begin. Take Buck Rogers for instance. If you asked anyone about Buck you’d probably hear about the new comic book or the old TV show with Gil Gerard or if you were lucky the old newspaper comic strip. But these and other incarnations of Buck were not the first. Buck Rogers began in the Pulps and is really the first true Space Hero. He was the first and because of that, for many years Science Fiction was known as “That Buck Rogers stuff.” (Said with a sneer usually.)

Buck started out in the world as Anthony Rogers. He was featured in two connected stories, “Armageddon 2419” (Amazing Stories, August 1928) and its sequel “Airlords of Han” (Amazing Stories, March 1929) by Philip Francis Nowlan. The magazine these stories ran in was the first all-Science Fiction Pulp, created by Hugo Gernsback in 1926. It shouldn’t really be surprising that the first Space Hero appeared in the first Space magazine. Gernsback was a crusader for Science, believing technology would change the world into a paradise. His background was radio and electronics and his magazines appealed to these kinds of readers, with lots of gadgets and pseudo-scientific speeches about them.

The plot of “Armageddon 2419” concerns the evil Han (yes, this was the era of Yellow Peril and racism is found in these stories) who take over the World. Anthony Rogers is a man from our time who is put to sleep by a mysterious gas in a mine and wakes to find his beloved America under the Han’s cruel thumbs. He joins a group of resistance fighters, who armed with their flying belts, take on the Han and begin to win back their homeland. Wilma Deering is one of these plucky rebels and the two eventually fall in love. In the sequel the rebels win the world back from their oppressors and all is well. Sounds clunky and just a little silly, doesn’t it? But Nowlan’s style was straight forward and the action scenes with flying men fighting the nasty Han ships are exciting and colorful. We all like to cheer for the underdogs.

At this point, Anthony Rogers is not yet Buck. On January 7, 1929, the National Newspaper Syndicate began a comic based on Nowlan’s story and Anthony became Buck, named after the 1920’s cowboy actor, Buck Jones. The strip was written by Nowlan and drawn by Dick Calkins. Beginning as an adaptation of the stories, the comic changed into tales of space and other fantastic adventures. It was in the comics that characters such as Black Barney, Killer Kane and Dr. Huer were added. The sign that Buck was influential far beyond those two original stories was that he was imitated. Flash Gordon began as a comic strip on January 7, 1934. Ironically, the man who played Flash in 1936, Buster Crabbe, would don the silver underwear to play Buck in 1939.

“That Buck Rogers Stuff” was here to stay. Radio, television, comic books, movie serials. All popular signs that Buck Rogers had gone from fighting the Han to becoming an SF icon, a fate some SF writers lamented. Adventure Science Fiction had begun and the pages of the Pulps, from Amazing Stories to Astounding Science Fiction to Thrilling Wonder Stories, would feature brash heroes who fight against fantastic enemies and win. Space adventurers would appeal to fans for generations to come. George Lucas, when he created his Star Wars franchise in the 1970s was thinking back to those Buster Crabbe serials and longing for the color and excitement they had. And all thanks to “That Buck Rogers stuff” and the first hero of space.

Making Books is fun! (to watch)

Here is a very interesting old video of how books used to be made. Wow, what a painstaking process! But it explains where a lot of the terms come that may not seem so obvious today. It's a little slow, but truly fascinating:

Lunch at the Loveless

Sherry and Sarah are in Nashville visiting the boys and Grams this weekend. When I talked to Sherry this morning she said their plan was to have lunch at the Loveless Cafe for Grams' and Mark's birthdays, which were this week. We used to live within ten minutes of the Loveless, but I've never eaten any meal but breakfast there.

Sarah's School to Close

The Maryville school board voted this week to close Sarah's school, the Fort Craig School of Dynamic Learning, after the 2011-2012 school year. Sarah will attend second grade at Fort Craig next year. We expect she will most likely attend third grade at John Sevier Elementary School, and fourth grade at the new Coulter Grove Intermediate School, which the system plans to open in fall 2012. Like most parents with children at Fort Craig, we have been delighted with Sarah's experience there, and we are proud of how much she has learned at Fort Craig in kindergarten and first grade.

NY Pie in Nashville

I read this week on the Tennessean website that West Nashville has a new New York style pizza restaurant, NY Pie. I take issue the comments in the Tennessean article that there is a dearth of good pizza in Bellevue. Our family particularly likes hometown favorites like Sir Pizza and Pizza Perfect, but I'm sure we'll try a NY Pie to see what all the fuss is about, especially since they are conveniently located on Charlotte Pike, not too far from Sherry's mom's house. There's always room in the neighborhood for another good pizza place.

Rumored Wrestlemania 27 Card

As of now this is the matches i predict for Wrestlemania 27 which is 5 weeks away.

WWE Championship
The Miz vs John Cena, with The Rock as the Ref.

World Heavyweight Championship
Edge vs Alberto Del Rio

Undertaker vs Triple H

Randy Orton vs CM Punk

Cody Rhodes vs Rey Mysterio

U.S Championship
Daniel Byran vs Sheamus

Diva Lumberjill Tag Match
Trish Stratus & Kelly Kelly vs Laycool

Money in the Bank
Kane vs Christian vs Drew McIntyre vs John Morrison vs Dolph Ziggler vs Jack Swagger vs Kofi Kingston vs Ted DiBiase

Wade Barrett vs Big Show

Michael Cole vs Jerry Lawler.

Thoughts

There is a lot of talent in that MITB that should be used in a singles match but i don't see it likely, Barrett vs Big Show seems likely as they both have no one else really to fued with. Cody Rhodes vs Rey Mysterio will be a good match and will give Cody a push that he needs. I don't like the Sheamus vs Daniel Byran match plans, Byran needs someone that is around his own size so we could see more great moves from Byran look realistic, same with Sheamus he needs to fued with someone bigger, i would like to see him face Kane but i don't see that likely. I love the divas match plans, Kelly is my favourite current diva and Trish is my favourite past diva plus i think Laycool are great, i do see WWE telling the other divas to stand around the ring as lumberjills as they usally do, another gimmick match. ADR vs Edge will be a good match at Mania but they need to add more to the fued, i would like to see Christian added to the match but that won't happen. CM Punk vs Randy Orton is a match i am looking forward to, i just hope they can add more to the storyline as they have 5 more Raws to kill. Cena vs Miz i don't see it being the best match of the night but it will be one of the best storylines of the night with The Rock added, i see him getting involved someway in this match. Jerry vs Michael Cole i almost forgot about, this match will be similar to the Bret vs Vince match from last year a good story but a bad match, Cole will get Riley to help him. Undertaker vs HHH,  the game does not need to put his career on the line for this match, they could add HBK to the storyline i would like to see him as ref but i don't think that will happen, it will make it more unpredictable.

The rumored Wrestlemania 27 card is looking much better than it was this time last month, above is 10 likely matches at the PPV. WWE has 5 weeks to kill till the PPV keep this in mind. It has potential to be a good Wrestlemania.

Free Spirit Spheres

Last time I posted about some groovy treeforts (the Treehotel in Sweden), Cathy June Arneson asked me if I'd heard of these - Free Spirt Spheres. They're little one room dwellings in Vancouver Island, Canada. You can rent one to stay overnight, or order parts to build one of your own. But either way - you'll be in the trees. How nice... Thanks for sharing Cathy! :)

WWE Smackdown results [February 25,2011]

World Heavyweight Champion Edge & Kelly Kelly def. Drew McIntyre & Vickie Guerrero (WATCH | PHOTOS)
Vickie Guerrero took part in the second SmackDown Mixed Tag Team Match in three weeks, knowing that if she and her partner Drew McIntyre lost, SmackDown General Theodore Long would fire her as the show's Official Consultant.
When Vickie stood in Edge’s way as he was about to Spear McIntyre in the climatic moments of the match, Kelly Kelly took her down with The Master Manipulator’s signature maneuver. The Ultimate Opportunist then followed suit, Spearing the "Chosen One" to seal his ex-wife’s fate.
After a jubilant Teddy Long fired his Official Consultant, an hysterical Vickie pledged with everyone she could to keep her job, including Edge himself. This prompted the 11-time World Champion to lead the WWE Universe in another rendition of “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye.” However, as The Rated-R Superstar watched Vickie walk off in disgrace, his WrestleMania No. 1 contender Alberto Del Rio attacked him, locking him in his vicious cross armbreaker. WWE Raw House Show Results (2/23/11) - Santiago, Chile

WWE Champion The Miz vs. Randy Orton
Ok match which ended in a classic "Miz way" cheating his way out with Riley's interference (pity on that cause WWE should build him strongly) just to get RKOed (him and Alex Riley) once the match was over. Miz interacted with the audience before the match in a pretty rusty Spanish taking a lot of heat. As for Randy Orton, the guy was really over with the crowd.

Closed Account

Today I closed the checking account that served as my general operating account when I was still in private practice. I left it open for the past couple of years to process attorney fees I earned before I entered government service, but for the past year or so the only payments that have gone into it are a from a couple of former clients who are paying their bills at $20.00 or so a month, so the account has outlived its usefulness. When I closed it, the lady at the bank commented that I opened the account in Nashville, which I did when I left the law firm I had been working with to operate a solo practice in 2003. Although I love what I do now, I must admit I feel a bit of sadness associated with giving up that one last vestige of private practice.

Kolchak: The Night Stalker Files #2

Earlier this week I reviewed The Spider #1 for Robot 6, but it’s not the only recent Moonstone book I’ve read. Nor is it the only one that offered an encouraging introduction to a character I’ve heard a lot about, but don’t have much personal experience with.

I do know a bit more about Kolchak than I did about The Spider. I have vague memories of watching a TV movie or two as a kid and I’ve checked out a couple of stories in one anthology or another, but none of those have actually helped the character for me. On the contrary, they gave me the impression that Kolchak’s misfortune and demoralization are such integral parts of the concept that there’s no hope that he’ll ever achieve any kind of success. I at least need the illusion that a hero may succeed, so when failure becomes a built-in part of the concept, I lose interest.

Still, enough people whose tastes are otherwise similar to mine enjoy Kolchak, so I keep trying to find a hook to grab onto. One of those people is Christopher Mills, so it’s appropriate that he’s writing Moonstone’s new comic series, which looks to be just the handhold I’ve needed.

I don’t know what happened in Kolchak #1, but I don’t need to because the second issue starts a new story arc. In it, Kolchak has been fired from yet another newspaper, but is on his way to Miami where he’s been offered a new job with a tabloid. One of the problems I’ve had with Kolchak in the past is that in the stories I’ve read he insists on being taken seriously as an investigative journalist, when he’s in fact Jack McGee from The Incredible Hulk. It might be overstating things to say that he’s embraced his McGee-ness in Kolchak #2, but he’s at least come to terms with it and is apparently being rewarded for it. Being rewarded – in my admittedly, very limited perspective – is something that’s long overdue for this character and it’s allowing me to move past Kolchak’s haplessness and enjoy the rest of the concept: a rumpled, unlikely monster-hunter.

And for his first case, he’s looking for a Florida skunk ape (in spite of the cover, which – while cool – has nothing to do with anything in the book), so I’m totally into that too.

It's an ABC Bookshelf! I'm not sure how many books this would hold, but it's still a cool idea. I bet it would make a good educational tool as well. Think of it, "You keep bear-bear in the 'Q' because it's just the right height to reach."

Spamalot

For Valentine's Day and our anniversary Sherry bought us tickets to go see Spamalot at the Tennessee Theater in May. I wonder if they will let me bring my two empty halves of coconut into the theater. I probably need to get her to watch Monty Python and the Holy Grail a couple of times in between now and show time so she'll have some idea of what is going on. I'm one of those people who can quote the movie verbatim, something I'm liable to do with increasing frequency as we get closer to May.

Discovery's Final Launch

We just watched the final launch of space shuttle Discovery on television, and I still feel the same sense of pride and wonder I had as a child growing up during the Apollo era, though space flight has become routine. Sherry and I made Sarah watch it on pain of no computer games for the night, and she grudgingly obeyed. The only wonder she experienced was wondering why we were making her watch this boring event.

Phood foto phun

If you were the editor who wrote captions for the photos accompanying the Los Angeles Times' restaurant reviews, wouldn't you try to learn the visual differences between - just for example - a stuffed chicken on the one hand and pierogies on a bed of sauteed cabbage on the other?

No. Apparently, you would not.

Unless Jidori is Hebrew for "cleverly disguised to look like pierogies," I think this description is a bit off.
One other quick thought: Are those of us in L.A. and New York getting to the point where a restaurant having a "Top Chef" alum on staff is sort of like having a basketball team with a "tall dude"?*

On February 24, 1803, the United States Supreme Court decided Marbury v. Madison. Thoughts on Elimination Chamber PPV and Raw 21-02-11

Both were very dissapointing, EC was predictable most years they have some sort of twist there were none last sunday, plus i predicted every match right. The SD Chamber match was good much better than the Raw one, the WWE title match was ok, but like i said Trish's return was my highlight.

Raw

Same very dissapointing this week, the 21-02-11 was a dissapointment considering WWE have teased HHH's return for half a year now he does and thats how he does it, he should have attacked Taker or something, the whole segment needed words to get the story of why Taker/HHH were back as the younger ones may not have known what was going on. WWE made a very smart move, they knew The Rock had made Cena look extremely bad so he needed to get the fans back being PG wasn't getting him anywhere so he had to rap. The rap was good, apparently they are going to keep insulting each other for the next few weeks, Rocks next appearance live should be in two weeks time, he could have a titantron appearance next week and hype the confrontation between him and Cena. The Miz and Cena tag title win was interesting and kept people watching, The Miz also cut a great promo on Raw. People think Michael Cole went too far but Jerry Lawler already knew before hand that his mother would be mentioned, Cole could have said much worse, i think Cole did well here and got the heat he needed, if he said something similar to Randy Orton in 2006 about Eddie i would have been disgusted. I don't know how they are going to build this for 5 more weeks. Wrestlemania 27 is looking better than it was this time last month, hopefully The Road To Wrestlemania is good too.

CM Punk def. John Morrison (WATCH | PHOTOS)
With both Superstars battered by their experience inside Satan’s Structure the night before, CM Punk faced off against John Morrison. Although The Shaman of Sexy appeared determined to carry on, an injury to his knee suffered the night before prevented him. The shrewd Second City Savior capitalized and pinned his opponent after hitting him with a GTS.
Punk then took the mic and warned rival Randy Orton to keep his distance. Rather than follow Punk’s advice, The Viper instead attacked the holier-than-thou Superstar.

Remember the Alamo!

On February 23, 1836, the Siege of the Alamo began. The fort fell on March 6, 1936. On the second day of the battle, William Barrett Travis wrote a letter to the people of Texas. It began,

I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna — I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man — The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken — I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls — I shall never surrender or retreat.

The bravery of the garrison that fell at the Alamo became a rallying cry, "Remember the Alamo," and the Texans under Sam Houston, a former Maryvillian, defeated the Mexican army under Santa Anna in the Battle of San Jacinto to gain Texan independence from Mexico.

Amazon of the Week: Marion Ravenwood

There are several reasons why Raiders of the Lost Ark is the best of the Indiana Jones films and Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) is at the top of the list. Although she plays the damsel in distress for a significant part of the movie, she never feels like she's filling that role. She's strong, she's capable, and if you're a guy in her way, she'll either seduce you, punch you, or drink you under the table depending on what the situation calls for.

Of the many problems Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom has, the biggest is that it didn't continue the story of Indy and Marion. Kate Capshaw's whiny, spoiled Willie Scott is no substitute. And though Alison Doody's Elsa Schneider was pretty tough in The Last Crusade, she lost points by being a villain (though I should probably watch that again with fresh eyes; I just remember being disappointed at the time).

It was smart of them to bring Marion back for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but a shame that they didn't give her a lot to do. She wasn't nearly as tough and cool as she'd been in Raiders. But then again, neither was Indy.

Land of the Lost: Season Three (Episode Twelve: Scarab)

Sorry I couldn't get this done yesterday. Spent the day rescuing people trapped by snow. I may have watched a Shirley Temple movie too, but it had a surly lighthouse keeper and Buddy Ebsen as a dancing sailor, so it was also a very manly activity.

Season One: Part One, Two, and Three.
Season Two: Part One and Two.
Season Three: Part One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten, and Eleven.

Episode 12: “Scarab”

While collecting firewood with Holly, Cha-Ka discovers a huge, golden beetle. Rather than continue to help with chores, he ditches Holly to catch the insect.

Back at the temple, the Marshalls are patient about Cha-Ka's laziness. As Jack points out, Cha-Ka doesn’t understand what it means to be part of a family that helps each other. They don't point it out, but this makes sense considering his background with the abusive Ta and Sa. Cha-Ka's defense for wanting to take the day off is that he worked yesterday, but the Marshalls explain that they did too. There’s still work to be done and they all need to pitch in and do it. That’s a great lesson for the young kids presumably watching the show, but also an indication of where the series was headed: less continuity and world-building; more adventure stories with moral lessons.

Cha-Ka gets what Jack and the others are telling him and promises to help, but before he has a chance, he and Holly argue over whether or not he should be able to keep the beetle. Holly contends that it’s wrong and that the bug should be let go. Cha-Ka ignores her, but as he’s putting the beetle into a cage, the insect bites him and flies away. It’s a painful bite and Cha-Ka decides he can’t go hunting for firewood after all. The Marshalls let him stay, but as soon as they’re gone he grins malevolently and trashes the temple.

His mischief doesn’t end there. Next he goes out to find Grumpy, taunts the T-Rex into following him, and leads the theropod to where the Marshalls are gathering their firewood. They escape – barely – and as they rest from the chase, Will notices Cha-Ka running through the jungle in the direction of the Lost City. They decide that Cha-Ka must be looking for them, so Will goes to get him while Jack takes Holly (injured while running from Grumpy) and the firewood back to the temple.
Cha-Ka enters the Lost City, sneaks past the Sleestak guards, and goes to the Cave of the Pit where the Sleestaks' pit god lives. There’s a new obelisk at the edge of the pit just begging to be toppled into it, so Cha-Ka obliges. It disappears into the foggy hole where we can't see anything, but I like to imagine that it hits the pit god on the head, because the creature immediately begins to bellow. That brings the Sleestaks running, letting Cha-Ka put his real plan into action. He sneaks into the Library of Skulls and steals the Skull of Wisdom.

Cha-Ka’s gone beyond mischief-making now. In place of the skull he sticks Will’s knife. The Sleestak Leader jumps to exactly the conclusion Cha-Ka wants him to, ignoring the attempts of Enik – who saw Cha-Ka leave the Lost City with the skull – to relate what he observed. The Sleestaks capture Will when he comes looking for Cha-Ka, and take him to the pit.

Back at the temple, Jack and Holly are confused about why the place is a mess, but don’t suspect anything’s wrong until Jack notices Cha-Ka lurking outside. When Jack tries to find out what’s going on, Cha-Ka makes a run for it, kicking and biting Jack in the process. He’s no match for Jack though, who overpowers him and carries him back inside. Even then though, Jack and Holly only think Cha-Ka’s being uncharacteristically naughty, not actively evil.

In the Lost City, Enik’s still trying to explain about Cha-Ka and is still being shouted down by the Sleestak Leader. The Leader starts a primitive hour glass and tells Will that he’s going into the pit if he doesn’t reveal the skull’s location before time runs out. Enik tries one last time to intervene, but the Leader shuts him up again, saying that Enik should be spending his time praying that Will’s sacrifice appeases the pit god. If it doesn’t, Enik’s next. It’s surprising to see the Leader turn on Enik so quickly, but it’s not out of character. The Sleestaks have never appreciated Enik’s cooperation, which makes his dedication to helping them learn and improve as a race that much more noble.

Making no headway with the Sleestaks, Enik visits the Marshalls at the temple and confronts Cha-Ka about what he saw. Cha-Ka freaks out and confesses that he took the skull, but isn’t telling where it is even though it means Will’s life. “Cha-Ka not like Will! Cha-Ka not like Sister! Cha-Ka not like anybody!”

Holly realizes that something’s seriously wrong and wonders if the beetle that bit Cha-Ka was poisonous. That’s the piece of the puzzle that Enik needs. He questions them about the beetle and declares that it’s Tula, not Aquagirl, but the ancient scarab once worshipped by the Egyptians. When offended – as Cha-Ka did by trying to take it captive – it stings and releases the evil nature of its victims, sending them down a path of self-destruction.

How Enik knows about the Egyptians is a mystery, but we can speculate that all the testing and exploration he’s done with various time-portals may have allowed him some peeks at Earth’s history. At any rate, he says that the only way for Cha-Ka to be free of the curse is to atone for his misbehavior by finding the scarab and treating it with kindness.

The problem of course is that Cha-Ka refuses to cooperate. Holly knows that the scarab lives in the swamp and they find it quickly, but rather than feed it a delicious flower that Holly finds, Cha-Ka runs away…right towards Lulu, the two-headed monster that lives in the swamp.

Jack saves Cha-Ka and tries to explain that he’s going to kill himself if he doesn’t straighten out. That seems to sink in and Cha-Ka reluctantly offers the scarab a flower, but before the beetle can eat it, as if the pressure of doing good is too much for him, Cha-Ka runs off into the jungle. Jack and Holly leave the scarab to its meal and go after him.

Meanwhile, Will’s time has run out and the Sleestaks are about to push him into the pit. Cha-Ka narrowly saves the day by running in with the skull and threatening to toss it into the hole if the Sleestaks don’t release Will. The tactic works, but as soon as the Sleestaks get the skull they chase Will and Cha-Ka out of the Lost City and keep on chasing them. Fortunately, a thunderstorm is just getting started and the lightning sends the Sleestaks back into their caves.

Will and Cha-Ka meet up with Jack and Holly and the four return to the temple to hunker down for the storm. Cha-Ka’s learned his lesson about laziness and offers to keep the fire stoked since the others did all the collecting of the wood.

Though I miss the complexity of the first season, this episode shows that the new direction of the series could've been worthwhile. Having a main character temporarily turn evil was a staple of '70s adventure television, but even considering that lack of originality, this was a tense episode with a great lesson for kids that wasn't forced, but felt organic to the story.

My favourite past diva teams up with my favourite current diva. The diva segment was my favourite part of the night as all 4 divas had some sort of slip, good to see the return of Trish Stratus' Thong.

Out of the Hollar

We had quite a nice visit to Cozy Creek yesterday. It was chilly enough to warrant a fire, and we ended up with a roaring blaze in the fire pit in the back yard. Jeffrey, a friendly Sevier County neighbor, joined us as we were gathering sticks and branches to make a fire. He went missing for a few minutes, and about the time we had a small fire going he showed back up with his pickup truck full of split wood and dry kindling. That's some mountain hospitality! We soon had a mighty fire, and it burned brightly into the evening.

We're back home now, and I've stowed away all of our gear from the overnight trip. I view this as the last winter trip to the mountains of the season. I saw daffodil blooms in Wears Valley on the way home this morning.

WWE Elimination Chamber 2011 results [February 20,2011]

OAKLAND, Calif. – Vickie Guerrero came before the WWE Universe at WWE Elimination Chamber, hoping to help her boyfriend, Dolph Ziggler, get his job back. But Guerrero’s apology and explanation about why Ziggler attacked SmackDown General Manager Theodore Longfell on deaf ears, and even prompted the re-hire of Kelly Kelly! (PHOTOS)
Guerrero explained that when Ziggler attacked Long several weeks ago on SmackDown, he and his cougar of a girlfriend were experiencing tumultuous times in their relationship, causing him to lash out.

“All he was doing was showing me how much he loves me but instead he committed a crime of passion,” Guerrero said in desperation, demanding some compassion and love from the WWE Universe.

Despite her desperate begging, pleading and kissing up, Long refused to listen to Guerrero’s request to rehire him after firing him on the latest SmackDown.

“Vickie, lucky for you, I am in a hiring mood,” Long revealed.

But it wasn’t Ziggler who’d be returning at WWE Elimination Chamber. Suddenly, Kelly Kelly appeared at the Oracle Center, and made a bee-line for the ring, attacking Guerrero.

It’s wasn’t before long that Kelly Kelly’s retribution-seeking return erupted into mayhem, as Michelle McCool and Layla ran to the ring to attack the blonde bombshell. It was two against one in Lay-Cool’s favor until Trish Stratus emerged! The soon-to-be WWE Tough Enough trainer came to Kelly Kelly’s aid, but Lay-Cool fought back against the seven-time Women’s Champion. However, it was Trish who prevailed, hitting both Michelle and Layla simultaneously with Strausfaction.

With Kelly Kelly’s return, and Ziggler’s continued unemployment, what’s next for the SmackDown roster? Tune in to Friday Night SmackDown at 8/7 CT only on Syfy.

OAKLAND, Calif. – John Cena may have punched his ticket for WrestleMania, but the fare proved steep indeed.

In a grueling Elimination Chamber Match, WWE’s 2010 Superstar of the Year was forced to overcome five other Superstars – Randy Orton, John Morrison, R-Truth, King Sheamus and CM Punk – to capture his third victory inside the structure and secure his place in the main event at WrestleMania XXVII. (PHOTOS)

John Morrison and King Sheamus kicked off the contest while the remaining four combatants waited within their corner pods, each of which would open randomly every five minutes.

One by one, the Superstars were unleashed within Satan’s Structure, but not without incident. When CM Punk’s time arrived, his pod refused to open properly. As a result, The Second City Savior endured a beatdown from Randy Orton, who quickly pinned him. Before he could leave the callous coliseum, however, Raw’s anonymous GM reinstated him in the interest of fairness.

The first combatant to officially crumble was R-Truth, who succumbed to the punishment of the Irishman. A surprising second elimination came when The Viper fell to a returning and rejuvenated Punk. After inflicting a plethora of pain, The Celtic Warrior finally gave up the ghost in third. With only three Superstars remaining, The Shaman of Sexy offered a valiant effort. However, a knee injury had hobbled him, allowing Punk to pin him after a GTS.

Finally, despite having logged a 3-0 record against Cena in their last three matches, The Second City Savior failed in his final conquest. Instead, the Cenation Commander-in-Chief rose above thanks in no small part to sheer determination and a reservoir of what he called “faith.”

With the challenge of the Chamber behind him, a battered Cena can look forward to recuperating for his WrestleMania confrontation with WWE Champion The Miz, who successfully defended his title against Jerry “The King” Lawler earlier at the same pay-per-view.

For now, though, Cena can be content at not only having survived his fourth stint inside Satan’s Structure, but at having thrived under the most adverse of conditions.

Happy Presidents' Day

Interestingly, although we celebrate the holiday as Presidents' Day, section 6103, title 5 of the United States Code declares "Washington's Birthday, the third Monday in February" to be a public holiday. Because Abraham Lincoln's birthday is February 12 and George Washington's is February 22, the holiday is often called Presidents' Day as a way of honoring and remembering both great men.

Elimination Chamber 2011 Predictions

WWE Championship Match:
-The Miz (c) vs. Jerry Lawler
Elimination Chamber Match for the World Heavyweight Championship:
-Edge (c) vs. Kane vs. Wade Barrett vs. Drew McIntyre vs. TBA
Elimination Chamber Match for a WWE Championship Match at WrestleMania:
-CM Punk vs. John Cena vs. John Morrison vs. Randy Orton vs. R-Truth vs. Sheamus
WWE Tag Team Championship Match:
-Santino Marella & Vladimir Kozlov (c's) vs. Heath Slater & Justin Gabriel
Non-Title Singles Match:
-Alberto Del Rio vs. Kofi Kingston

Sadly i am not too excited about tonights PPV. All the matches seem very predictable. I do however think that one or two matches will be added to the card. This is the order i think the matches will be in tonight.

Elimination Chamber Match for the World Heavyweight Championship:
-Edge (c) vs. Kane vs. Wade Barrett vs. Drew McIntyre vs. TBA vs. Rey Mysterio

I like the superstars in this match, but only the faces have a chance at winning since the winner faces Alberto Del Rio at Wrestlemania 27. There is an open spot in this match which hasn't been noticed by many, i don't think this will happen but this spot could be used for Christian, Christian wins the title and sets up Edge vs ADR vs Christian at WM27 for the title. However i see Cody Rhodes having this spot to heat up the fued between him and Mysterio. My main prediction is for Edge to retain with Kane or Barrett being the last to be pinned.

(Possible Match) Big Show vs Zeke Jackson

I would like to see this match and it would put over Jackson, the rest of the Corre have matches tonight, this rivalry has looked interesting and this is most likely the reason why Big Show is not in the Chamber. Big Show would win this match but big zeke would look inpressive.

Non-Title Singles Match:
-Alberto Del Rio vs. Kofi Kingston

i just noticed something! Kofi Kingston is Intercontinental Champion! Forgot he ever won it, he hasn't done anything with the belt and it could be defended in this match according to reports. Alberto will win, theres no chance of him losing even if the title is on the line.

WWE Tag Team Championship Match:
-Santino Marella & Vladimir Kozlov (c's) vs. Heath Slater & Justin Gabriel

How many times has this match happened? and its always the same outcome with Santino about to win and Barrett and Jackson attack them. Why can't Vlad ever get the pinfall just wondering. I think The Corre (with two Rs thanks to Slater) will win the titles, which will heat up a fued with (New) Nexus.

(Possible Match) Divas Championship Match
Michelle McCool vs Eve

I hope this is a match, its been building since the Rumble. If this was a match Eve would retain.

WWE Championship Match:
-The Miz (c) vs. Jerry Lawler

This will be very like the matches on Raw, were Miz dominates until Jerry comes back into the match and looks impressive. Lawler will come close to winning the match but Michael Cole will get Miz DQed so he keeps the title, this will heat the fued going into mania between the two announcers, Lawler will cut a promo backstage before the match, saying that he has waited for this his entire career. But Miz will retain by DQ.

Elimination Chamber Match for a WWE Championship Match at WrestleMania:-CM Punk vs. John Cena vs. John Morrison vs. Randy Orton vs. R-Truth vs. Sheamus

R-Truth will win and main event Wrestlemania 27...... ok all joking aside the first 4 on the list above (Punk, Cena, Morrison and Orton) are the only ones who stand a chance. I don't think it will be won by Orton or Punk as they will have a match with each other at WM27, Morrison would have been a possibility a month ago for a Morrison v Miz match at WM27, but this match will be won by John Cena. The Rock pretty much gave it away, i hope Cena has an interview tonight want to hear his thoughts on Rock. The final two in this match will be Orton and Cena, with Cena winning and for the seventh Wrestlemania in a row he will be in the title match.

I don't expect tonights PPV to be great as i don't see many twists happening as everything seems predictable, i hope to be shocked tonight but i don't see it happening.

Merry Wives of Windsor at Clarence Brown Theater

Shakespeare's Merry Wives of Windsor is to be staged at the Clarence Brown Theater beginning next week. It is one of the few Shakespeare plays I didn't read in Professor Phillips' Law and Literature class over at the George C. Taylor College of Knowledge, as the good professor used to call the UT Law School. I've been meaning to take Sarah to see a play, and this seems like a good opportunity, so I've dusted off my Complete Works of Shakespeare so that I can read the play before we go see it.

The picture book, The Gruffalo written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, has been made into an Academy Award®-nominated short film! We'll know if it wins during the Oscars on February 27th. Meanwhile, get a load...

But even better - here's a "Making of" which I just adore...

How awesome for this story to have this new life...
Per the press info:
The film tells the magical tale of a mouse who takes a walk though the woods in search of a nut. Featuring a top-notch voice cast including Helena Bonham Carter, James Corden, Tom Wilkinson, John Hurt, Rob Brydon and Robbie Coltrane, Axel Scheffler’s classic artwork is brought to life with a unique mixture of computer animation shot on physical sets. You got your comics in my literature!

I was killing some time at Barnes and Noble the other night and noticed something cool in the Mystery section.

See it?

Here. Have a closer look.

That's Ian Edginton and INJ Culbard's comics adaptation of The Sign of Four, not in the Graphic Novel section, but right there on the Mystery New Releases shelf with the prose novels.

Pretty cool, huh?

Heading for the Hollar

We have been busy recently with last weekend's trip to Sevierville followed by a very full work week, so after having done our Saturday morning duties we are having a restful afternoon at the homestead. La and Stew and Grace are up in Pigeon Forge painting the deck at Sunset Ridge, and we plan to meet up with Laura and Grace tomorrow at Cozy Creek, pictured above, in Gatlinburg.
Mom said she may drop by here this afternoon, or she may come spend part of the day with us up at Cozy Creek tomorrow. Les and Fraz may come up tomorrow as well, and our friend Johnny plans to drive up from Atlanta either today or tomorrow, so there seems to be a general movement afoot to get back up into the mountains and enjoy the wonderful weather and the long weekend.

Did Dolph Ziggler Win The World Title?

According to the title history section on wwe.com yes he did, this means that Edge is now an 11 time World Champion. Dolph went into detail about the firing today on Twitter but it most likely is a storyline. The ending of Smackdown felt like an end to a Road to Wrestlemania storyline on the video game WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2011.

The first night of the match was great i must say, though i would not have minded it being a bit longer.

Dolph has been removed from the Elimination Chamber match this Sunday, i noticed something during the middle of Smackdown, they showed a video package promoting the SD elimination chamber match, i noticed Dolph was not in this, later on it was revealed that he was fired but still this was a bad move from WWE, wwe.com is promoting it as a 5 man chamber match, is this Christians chance to return and book his ticket to Wrestlemania 27?

Drew will most likely get Kelly Kelly rehired within the next week either at the PPV or SD since T'Lo is back.

A new match has been added to the PPV.

Tag Team Championships
Santino & Kozlov vs Slater and Gabriel

Early

It is a rare event when anyone is awake before me in the morning, but when I woke up about 5:00 a.m. I heard Sarah quietly singing to herself in her room. She was quiet when I got out of bed, but she joined me in the office shortly after I came up here. Sherry rented her a Megamind Wii game, and I suspect the child woke up this morning excited about playing the new game, which she is doing now.

WWE Smackdown results [February 18,2011]

John Cena, Randy Orton, John Morrison, R-Truth, Rey Mysterio & Edge def. CM Punk, Sheamus, Kane, Wade Barrett, Dolph Ziggler & Drew McIntyre in a 12-Man Tag Team Match (WATCH | PHOTOS)
As the third longest weekly episodic TV program in history, SmackDown kicked off its 600th episode with a massive 12-Man Tag Team Match. With members of both the Raw and SmackDown Elimination Chamber Matches in action, it was Edge and Drew McIntyre who tangled first. In the end, it was a 619 from Rey Mysterio to both Wade Barrett and Dolph Ziggler that set up Edge to seal the deal for his team by Spearing Ziggler.

The Eagle (2011)

My first instinct was to do refer to the quality of this movie as a roller-coaster, but that's not accurate. It's more of a bobsled ride. It's got some occasional, gentle slopes to keep you from feeling like you're plummeting into Hell, but the entire trip is downhill and you still end up lower than when you began.

It starts okay with Channing Tatum's Marcus Aquila arriving in Britannia to command a garrison there. If you've seen the trailer, you know the plot. His father once commanded the same area, but on an excursion into the wild North, he and his men disappeared with Rome's standard, a golden statue of an eagle. Marcus doesn't come to Britannia to find the standard, but when he's injured in battle and relieved of duty, he decides to fill his time with a quest. He takes with him his slave Esca (Jamie Bell), who's from the northern lands where Marcus' father went missing and can act as a guide.

As long as the story is about Marcus' personal quest, it does all right. Tatum makes Marcus likeable and the script leaves some doubt about whether or not his dad's death was noble and courageous or foolhardy and cowardly. Though most of the other Romans are too polite to speculate to his face, even Marcus wonders if his father may have deserted rather than fallen in battle. If the film had followed that path, it would've been a much better movie. The titular standard should have been a Maguffin for the real quest: solving the mystery of Marcus' father's disappearance.

Instead, the movie does both, which is what makes it uneven. When it's focusing on Marcus and his relationship with his absent father, it's not half bad. There's still too much shaky-cam and fogged-over camera lenses and weird flashbacks to make it Good, but it would've been Okay. Unfortunately, the eagle standard is much more than an excuse to go hunting for answers about Dad. We're supposed to take it seriously as an end worth pursuing, so that the Dad plot is wrapped up before the Eagle plot and we're still asked to care.

There's a scene early on in which Esca questions Marcus about the importance of the standard. Marcus tries to explain - something about "The eagle is not a piece of metal. The eagle is Rome" - but fails to adequately express it and settles for, "You're not a Roman. You wouldn't understand." Well, guess what, makers of The Eagle? I'm not a Roman either. I'm your audience and I need to understand if you want me invested in your story.

There's another scene towards the end of the film where the heroes are valiantly fighting against overwhelming numbers to defend the standard. (I hope that's not a spoiler that Marcus and Esca do in fact find the eagle at some point). As they battle, the camera switches to a high-angle view of the field with the standard in the foreground as the men fight below. I'm pretty sure it's meant to be inspiring, but it made me sad and a bit sick. It was like this hunk of metal was proudly watching over the meaningless violence and death it had inspired.

A sharp mind

It seems highly unlikely, but maybe my migraines are being caused by something like this.

I hope not, though, because the doctors who were unable to properly diagnose that dude's problem four years ago deserve to have the title of Stupidest Doctors on the Face of the Planet all to themselves.

Would the Bard Have Survived the Web?

There's an important article in the New York Times everybody should read (you may have to register with a free account - please do!): "Would the Bard Have Survived the Web?" by Scott Turow, Paul Aiken and James Shapiro. The article talks about the importance of copyright protection and how its invention basically allowed the creative explosion of playwrites in Shakespeare's time. (It's a very interesting read.)
However, with the advent of the internet and easy access, copyright protections have come under attack. To quote:
They [file-sharers] ... ignores centuries of scientific and technological progress based on the principle that a creative person should have some assurance of being rewarded for his innovative work.
Sadly, this has become more and more of an issue for me as I've had to be diligent making sure my coloring pages are used fairly. While I offer them for free for personal or non-commercial use, I often find companies using my images for logos, business promotions, or including them in public correspondence, etc.
It's often my awesome followers who alert me to the infringements (thank you!) and I do indeed go after the infringers (twice just this week).
Most of the time people use my images out of ignorance over copyright laws and I use the infringement as an opportunity to educate. Others respond as if I'm a big meanie, and they haven't done anything wrong. Those are... disappointing.
My art is how I make my living after all, and if somebody uses my art in a commercial way without compensating me, well, they're basically keeping food off my table. That ain't cool. Again to quote the article:
As with much else, literary talent often remains undeveloped unless markets reward it.
and
A rich culture demands contributions from authors and artists who devote thousands of hours to a work and a lifetime to their craft.
Bottom line - artists deserve to be compensated for their work. Otherwise, we won't have time to create the works society craves. We'll be too busy working 'regular' jobs.
Which, by the way, I work longer hours as a free-lancer than I ever did with my 9 to 5 jobs. The key to remember is artists don't get paid to show up to work every day (and boy do I miss that sometimes). We make our living when people pay to use our creations.
What do you think? Will you help protect my ability to create? Spread the good word about copyright protection!
