Emancipation Day

I wondered why Federal income tax returns are not due until April 18 this year rather than April 15, which is usually tax day in the United States. I learned that Washington, DC, celebrated Emancipation Day this year on April 15, so the filing deadline was moved from last Friday to today. Emancipation Day is a holiday for our nation's capitol, and it commemorates Abraham Lincoln's emancipation of the slaves in that city on April 16, 1862.
