My City  ?

Ouro Preto, Brazil

a year ago, during my first meeting with the label agua de coco (s/s 2011), i was more impressed with the artful cover-ups and breezy beach dresses than any of the swimwear.  now the brand is back with more for another hot season, and though their s/s 2012 range, presented at são paulo fashion week, certainly had some pretty tops and maxi dresses, the focus was clearly on the bikinis—and didn’t disappoint.

as portais da moda’s review reports, the collection’s theme was (trans.) “’What art is there for everyone and everything’…a result of tours conducted in the museums of Europe.”  they go on to state that many of the prints featured aerial beach photography by brazilian artist cássio vasconcelos, while the geometric shapes of modern art pieces were also heavily employed.

the artisan techniques extended to the show’s materials, generally employing a fabric that ffw’s review describes as (trans.) “jello”, which gave the looks a “semi-transparent and wet finishing”, as well as various cotton blends.  though the colour palette was still quite varied, it felt a little more muted than similar swimwear shows we’ve been seeing of late, with some almost fall tones creeping in in lieu of the neons elsewhere.  tangerine, mint, off-white, hot pink, dusty brown, gold, cornflower, and ochre sat alongside big hibiscus prints, palm trees, beachside scenes, and plenty of abstract art motifs.

draping was a strong trend, , as was colour-blocking, and the swimsuits often featured bras with thick straps and tiny bottoms, while portais da moda points out (trans.) “trims in gold - one more charm to the collection - seen in buckles, straps and wires,” and pleats at the back of a number of pieces, which folded like accordions.  and, though bikinis were, as previously mentioned, the mainstay, there were some equally good tank suits (as the one worn by luana teifke, second from top), maxi dresses and skirts, and a couple of charming shortie cover-ups.

if the range fell short in one area—mirth of the artistic swimwear aside—it was that it felt a little too heavily accessorized, from the sale of products at nearly every turn, to the way the girls were, frankly, too heavily made-up (see a good detail shot of opener caroline trentini; where many others have emphasized natural beauty, agua de coco went a little nuts with the bronzer, methinks), and the hair so severely pulled from their faces just served to underscore this point.

anyway, it wasn’t that the accessories weren’t good—in fact, i quite liked the geometric gold cuffs, but pairing those with the loud suede platform peep toe sandals in shades of fuchsia, tomato, and tangerine (an more austere beige version was also offered); bold gold earrings and necklaces; gold geometric bangles; and varioustypes of bag—is this girl going to the beach or starring in an editorial? in short, i think it undermined what they set out to do, which was rather a shame, for i did like the delightful, creative swimwear, which ought to have been given more of an opportunity to speak for itself.

Ground Zero of No Fun: For me, this might just be Office Depot, land of zombie checkout people, long lines, absent floor helpers and … well, it’s just a pain in the ass. I put it off for so long, I’m practically on my last piece of paper and my last drop of ink. And that’s not good for anyone. They put everything where you’d least expect it, hide the things you need most in dark corners, and I’m sure that somewhere, someone is laughing and rubbing his greedy little hands together, believing that this actually is going to make you buy more stuff. After all, you can’t resist what you’re forced to walk past three or four times, right?

Ha!

Applying a little mindfulness to an Office Depot run is a little like having dinner with someone you loathe. You’re going to do it, gritting your teeth the whole time and trying to be polite. But you’re not going to like it, damn it. So imagine my surprise when I visited Office Depot today (on a Sunday, no less!) and the usual gulag mentality was in full effect. I half expected the ceiling to spontaneously lower itself and the lights to flicker on and off, like in the movie Brazil. But no go. I decided to reframe this as an expedition, viewing the haphazard arrangement of goods like natural formations. After all, you don’t get pissed at nature for putting rocks next to streams, or inconvenient boulders where you want to hike. You go up and around, or over.

After a few minutes, it wasn’t half bad. I saw a little kid amongst the office furniture playing office, I guess, which made me laugh. And my reward for all this reframing work? My newly found playful sense of purpose?

Zebra striped binder clips.

I know. A small thing. Not earth shattering, or world changing in the slightest. But my paperwork’s going to be stylin’ for the next several months, and who knows? The stuff I send to the IRS may put a smile on someone’s face a hundred miles away.

I got the Job!!!! Thank you God.

we’ve been seeing a lot of swimwear of late, which should probably be expected given that we’ve been exploring the environs of australia and brazil, places in which most of us northerners mythicize as entirely beach-front lands (perhaps with a hole in the latter for cidade de deus) where exotic creatures roam and girls resembling gemma ward and the gemma ward of brazil, luana teifke (second from bottom) roam in bikini uniforms with little more to do than seduce you by recreating the phoebe cates pool scene in ‘fast times at ridgemont high’ and drinking margaritas from lounge chairs.

i’m not going to try to spoil your outlook by telling you that the countries are different, but i will say their designers aren’t proffering a very strong case suggesting otherwise, given the amount of sexytimes we’ve been exposed to via lisa maree, triya, foxton danger, and janeiro, among others. add brazilian label lenny to that list with a s/s 2012 range that rivals the best of them and get ready to discuss some girls in spandex.

i was first introduced to the brand approximately a year ago, while recovering from surgery, and to paraphrase quickly, i was rather impressed by the quality of garments, if a little taken aback by designer lenny niemeyer’s self-impressed demeanor.  i needed an extra couple of days for all the spitting and hacking i was to do over it, but i guess it just helps fuel the idea that all the girls in these countries are hot.  got that?  they’re hot.  hotter than you.  yeah, i’m tired of the idea too, but some people make a living off of this shit and that’s what we’re here to discuss, i guess.  so back to that…

the spring range represented the brand’s 20th anniversary, so rather than a single story, we were treated to a retrospective staged at the lagoa rodrigo de freitas, complete with a lot more guests than one could convince to come were this anything but a swimwear (or lingerie) show and 40 models of varying degrees of fame and whom i don’t really care to go in further about.

the show then seemed divided into segments of sorts, with what seemed to be water (see luana’s dress, second from bottom), tribal (above), and jungle motifs (bruna’s bikini, bottom) in a diverse array of colours including grassy green, white, ultramarine, teal, orange, black, lemon, and lime.  many of the prints were aptly titled, we’re informed by ffw, with names (all translated) such as ‘blue macaw’, ‘fishbone’, and ‘palm’.

of course the beach or pool was first and foremost on one’s mind whilst viewing the range, with multiple clever interpretations of tank suits, bikinis, and whatever other names exist for those things these days (i don’t really keep track).  the lacy, crocheted-looking numbers (fourth from top) were the particular highlights among them, but versions with cut-outs, embroidery, fringe, beading, and embossing all popped up, making for some of the more fetching alternatives we’ve seen this season.

for all of that, though, there were still a great many alternatives and cover-ups—both for the shyer girls and for those simply wanting to pull something on to carry along with her evening as it gets cooler.  maxi dresses (the hot item of the season) with a strategically-placed slit, little crocheted cover-ups, cropped tops, short dresses, and a few jumpsuits, most of which had substantial cache in their own right numbered among the clothing-orientated choices.

and while i’m not, as i’ve said practically every swimwear review, inclined toward raptures over the stuff, i must admit lenny knows her stuff.  like most people who have ever flipped through women’s magazines, i’ve read a lot of bilge about every woman’s body being flattered by the right suit and found the concept much like so many tired self help books clogging up the bargain bin of a bookshop.

however, with this latest display, i’m encouraged to change my opinion, if only a little, revising it to the idea that every woman’s body can be flattered by the right swimwear-related piece.  not a fan of a bikini (me either)?  grab débora’s relatively conservative number (second from above) anywhere on along to that floor-sweeping lime creation at top (and which i would totally wear in about a second).  i guess swimwear is a little more fun, and ms. niemeyer can give herself whatever compliments she wants.
